Footnotes

1 A number of people joined me on the sleepover at Sweet Briar, including Toni Battle, a descendant of enslaved ancestors and a member of Coming to the Table; Crystal Rosson; Liz, a friend of Crystal’s from Amherst; Lynn Rainville; Dave Griffith (then a Sweet Briar professor of English); and Michael Hayslett, the college naturalist.

2 My visit at the College of Charleston was part of the campus’s Jubilee Project, which commemorates Emancipation in 1863, educational access, and the end of segregated schools in South Carolina, beginning in 1963. I spoke to students about the Slave Dwelling Project as part of a panel that also included discussion of Maj. Gen. John C. Frémont. During the Civil War, in August 1863, as commander of the Western Department for the Union army, Frémont issued a contested de facto emancipation proclamation in the state of Missouri that he was later forced to rescind.

3 The weekend Terry James and I visited the College of Charleston we also spent a night at 25 Longitude Lane. At that time, it was the home of Susan E. Heape. The Longitude Lane sleepover is described in Chapter 16.
